Movie Preview: The Hobbit(s)

Filming of The Hobbit movies is currently in full swing and a few days ago the official titles were released. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14, 2012 and (assuming the world doesn’t end) The Hobbit: There and Back Again will be released on December 13, 2013.  The movies will (again) be directed by Peter Jackson.  Bilbo will be played  Martin Freeman, best known for his role in the British version of The Office and Thorin will be played by Richard Armitage, best known for his role in a bunch of TV shows I've never heard of.  Also, the actors playing Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Gollum (Andy Serkis), Elrond (Hugo Weaving), Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), Saruman (Christopher Lee), Old Bilbo (Ian Holm), Frodo (Elijah Wood), and Legolas (Orlando Bloom) will reprise their roles from the original trilogy, although it is likely some of those characters (Old Bilbo, Legolas, Frodo) will only make brief appearances.

Bilbo is one sexy beast
Personally, I believe the movies will be very good, why wouldn’t they be?  However, I am a little disappointed Guillermo Del Toro is no longer directing.  The Hobbit is more of a fairytale than The Lord of the Rings and I don’t think there is a director better suited to film fairytales than Del Toro (the Hellboy movies and Pan’s Labyrinth).  That being said, I’m sure the movies will still be great.  Jackson’s attention to detail and knowledge of the source material made The Lord of the Rings some of the best movies of the 2000’s; the two Hobbit movies should be no different.
